The Illumina Respiratory Virus Enrichment Kit, formerly known as the Respiratory Virus Oligo Panel (RVOP), provides an effective, streamlined method for detecting common respiratory viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A/B.
Target enrichment through the hybrid–capture method allows for highly sensitive detection without requiring the high read depth needed for shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Additionally, this method allows for dramatically larger probe panels for comprehensive profiling compared to amplicon sequencing while producing whole-genome sequencing data for the targeted viruses.
This comprehensive workflow integrates library preparation, target enrichment, sequencing, and data analysis, giving researchers and public health scientists the ability to monitor multiple viruses and variants with one workflow

In a titration experiment of human saliva RNA spiked with a defined amount of virus copies, the Illumina Respiratory Virus Enrichment Kit resulted in detection of viral reads from as low as two copies of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA.
The Respiratory Virus Oligo Panel includes 7800 probes to detect common respiratory viruses, recent flu strains, SARS-CoV-2, and human probes to act as positive controls. All probes are 80-mer oligos, spaced very close together, providing full genome coverage of all viruses in the panel.
